Surveillance Camera Policy - Airbnb 03/15/2024

Airbnb has banned the use of surveillance cameras in accommodations globally as part of efforts to simplify its policy on video surveillance and other devices and to continue to prioritize the privacy of our community.

Historically, Airbnb allowed the use of indoor surveillance cameras in common areas of listings, such as hallways and living rooms, as long as they were disclosed on the listing page before booking, clearly visible, and were never placed in spaces such as bedrooms. bed and bathrooms. Updating this policy simplifies our approach and clarifies that security cameras are not permitted in any home, regardless of their location, purpose, or whether the guest has previously been notified of their presence..

“Our goal is to provide our community with more clarity on what to expect on Airbnb. These changes were made in consultation with our guests, hosts and privacy experts, and we will continue to seek feedback to ensure our policies serve our global community.”

Juniper Downs, Head of Community Policy and Partnerships at Airbnb.

Since most listings on Airbnb do not report the use of security cameras, this update is expected to impact a small group of listings on the platform.

In addition to the ban on internal cameras, the revised policy will also include more comprehensive rules on the use of external security cameras and other devices, including sound level meters.

Devices such as doorbell cameras and sound level meters continue to be permitted on Airbnb and can be an effective– yet privacy-friendly – way for hosts to monitor the security of their home and anticipate problems such as unauthorized parties. However, hosts will be required to disclose the presence and general location of any outdoor cameras before guests make a reservation. These cameras will also be prohibited from monitoring the interior spaces of an accommodation and will not be allowed in certain outdoor areas where there is a greater expectation of privacy, such as an outdoor shower or sauna. Hosts must also disclose the presence of sound level meters, which only evaluate decibel levels and do not record or transmit sounds or conversations and are only allowed in common areas of homes.

To give hosts time to adjust to these updates, the new rules will go into effect on April 301. Subsequently, reported violations of this policy that are brought to our attention will be investigated and actions we take may include removal of the listing or account.

Community and expert input is critical to ensuring our policies help everyone have positive experiences on Airbnb, and these changes were made following extensive discussions with guests, hosts, privacy experts, and advocacy groups.
